On Sunday night, my air conditioner quit on me. It made this squealing sound, then quit. The compressor works, but the fan won't blow any air.

This air conditioner is only four years old. I had my previous air conditioner for twenty years without any problems, so this really tees me off.

And I can't afford to call in a repairman, nor get a new one.

I suppose I'm lucky it didn't happen in May, but we've still got some hot weather ahead of us. I went out and bought a couple more fans, but it's not really cutting it.

I'm lucky that my house is well-shaded, as it would be no doubt worse if I had a atark, bare, treeless yard.

If it's not one thing, it's another. Sigh.

That kind of sucks! How about checking craigslist or something like that for a used one to get you through the rest of the year? Or even a new room sized one?

Personally I wish I had central heat/air in my house! With oil prices the way they are, I'd almost rather pay for electric heat!

itsmylife: I have electric heat and live in Minnesota...the electric bills in the winter would scare you back to oil!

Will: That sucks about the air conditioner. Around here it is starting to get cooler already. I don't think I will need to use mine for the rest of the year. Too bad you don't live closer, I'd let you use ours....but then if you lived closer, you wouldn't need it!

poor mans air conditioner....put a blow of ice in front of the fan...blows cold air (did this in one of our apartments that had no air conditioning and only one widow that opened!)

You sure it's not still under warranty? Most modern units have 5 years on them.

Logis: You live in Europe, where the climate is decidedly different from that of the American Deep South. The summer heat here would make a northern European cry.

I didn't save the receipt or any of the paperwork when I bought the unit, Aiel, so I don't know if I could claim the warranty without those things.

You should be able to...they'll do the check by serial number rather than any paperwork you have anyways. It'll be a manufacturers warranty that you'd have if you have one at all, so where you bought it would be irrelevant.

If you look around a bit and/or hit craigslist, you can probably pick up a window unit for relatively cheap that will tide you over until it cools down. I picked up a 1500btu window unit for 40 bucks a few years ago just by looking around at garage sales.
