Three Stooges Movie
As a kid in the sixties and seventies, I grew up watching The Three Stooges on TV every afternoon after school. I must have seen every episode dozens of times. Even now, I could accurately reproduce the opening music for each episode, as the tune is burned into my brain.
My friends and I would imitate Moe and Curly, with one doing the eye jabs, and the other putting up a hand between our eyes to block it. We'd do some of the other gestures, such as Moe slowly raising his hand in front of Curly, whose eyes would follow it up, and who would then be surprised brought it down suddenly to slap him on the face.
We'd do Curly's "woob, woob, woob, woob, woob, woob,", "nyuk, nyuk, nyuk", "wiseguy, eh ?", and his high pitched hum: "la da DEEEEEEE, la, la, la, la, deee". And naturally we'd try his breakdance-like thing of lying on the floor and spinning ourselves around in circles.
I've missed watching the Stooges, as I've never gotten around to buying their DVDs.
I heard the other day that a Three Stooges movie, which will be a modern version of the 1930s and 40s episodes, will be released in 2010. Jim Carrey will play Curly, with Sean Penn as Larry, and Benecio Del Toro as Moe. I think Carrey will be great as Curly, though he'll have to gain quite a bit of weight or put on a fat suit to pull it off. The other two I'm not so sure of, but perhaps Carrey can carry the entire movie if the other two prove to be miscast.
The movie will be released some time in 2010.

That's awesome, I can see Jim Cary in this movie..not so sure about the other two.

What? Jim Carey maybe.....can't quite picture the other two. Besides - how can you remake the 3 Stooges?
Untitled Comment
That's what I was thinking. Most remakes suck.

I heard on the radio that Jim carey plans on gaining 40 pounds for the role. That doesn't sound very healthy.
I will have to wait to see it until it comes out in dvd.

Can't imagine how that remake would work.
You don't see any re-runs of the 3 Stooges on TV because by todays liberal standards it's way too violent and they wouldn't want kids to re-enact the nutty stuff they did. Same reason that they don't show the old great Merry Melody or Loony Tune cartoons. Too violent. Now all cartoons carry some sort of moral message either during the cartoon or after. Todays cartoons totally suck!!!
Bring the greats back....and the Stooges too!!

You know, Michael, everything doesn't have to be about politics. I'm guessing they don't show the Stooges any more because they don't think it will gain them viewers. It's all about money to them.

Will....being a liberal doesn't have to have anything to do with politics, and you know that. Plus, I didn't mention anything about politics in my comment, sorry that you took it that way!
Had I elaborated I would've said that it's individual liberal groups and larger liberal organizations that have crusaded and campaigned over the years to have programs like "The Three Stooges", and the cartoons by Loony-Tunes and Merry Melodies, both of which are Leon Schlesinger creations, removed from TV because of the violence portrayed in them.
Their mantra centered around the belief that if kids watch this kind of thing, then they're much more likely to act out, (in school, on the playground, with siblings at home etc), the violence that they see. Namely....the eye poking, the slaps, getting bonked over the head with whatever is close by, and pretty much anything that involved physical violence. The exact same things in the cartoons. They didn't think it appropriate that little kids should watch Elmer Fudd constantly shooting at Bugs Bunny. Or Daffy Duck reeking havoc with anyone and everyone he encountered. See what I'm saying??
I distinctly remember when their outcry's started, and it was clear by the names of the people and the organizations involved that they were all very liberal. Things of this nature are not typically a part of the conservative agenda. These are the same people that wouldn't let up until TV shows and movies got rated. G, PG, PG-13, and R. Surely you remember that era? And Hollywood pitching royal fits over it because they feared a serious decline in theater-goers and TV viewership?
Not to mention that is was one of the times where Hollywood liberals were pitted against their own liberal kind. I'm sorry man....I would've thought that you'd have remembered this and understand that I was not bringing anything political into this! I hate that this happened. I loved watching the Stooges and the old, great cartoons! And I certainly don't recall any kids acting out what they saw Elmer, Daffy, and company did....much less the antics of Curly, Moe, and Larry-Joe!
I sure hope that helped to clarify where I was coming from....

I didn't think you were trying to turn this political..:)
I do remember all of that. My friends would get mad at me because I was letting my kids watch some of those cartoons. Haha, I would laugh because I and all my friends turned out perfectly alright, and so did my boys.

Well, I'm as liberal as they come, Michael, but I love all that stuff, just as you do. You've seen me write about the "Nanny State" before, the idea of government treating citizens like children.
But I disagree that the Nanny impulse only comes from the left side of the aisle. Yes, there are so-called "liberal" nannies who want to limit freedom in the way that you mentioned, but there are most certainly conservative nannies as well. The conservative ones worry about anything more sexual than a peck on the cheek in movies, music and TV; anything that goes against their view of "family values". There are also some conservatives who are active in book banning campaigns -- Laura Mallory who wants the Harry Potter books removed from the schools is a good example.
So, nannyism isn't limited to the left or the right, though the particular topic or issue does differ.
I'd recommend you read "The Nanny State" by David Harsanyi, where he explored this issue and skewers both the left and the right about nanny laws. The author is a libertarian, if I'm not mistaken.
